As part of our ongoing work for ActionAid, Big Umbrella has produced a VNR about the Kenyan Food Crisis consisting of video footage from two different regions of Kenya and interviews with some of those most affected. This has been shown on C4 News, ITN, Sky News and the BBC.
We have also produced a package voiced by ActionAid’s Hannah Crabtree for viewing online via the ActionAid website.
Eleven million men, women and children across East Africa are at risk of starvation. The worst drought in the region for 20 years has caused water supplies to dry up, crops to fail and livestock to die. Without their animals, families have no milk to drink and no calves to sell.
Hannah Crabtree, who has recently returned from a trip to northern Kenya, said: "As I drove up to Mandera the stench of rotting carcasses was all around. Herds of cattle, sheep and even camels have died. The local people are totally dependant on their animals and many have been left destitute, reliant on emergency supplies of food and water. Even if rains do come, with their animals gone, people will continue to need help for many years to come."
In Kenya, one of the worst affected countries, there are over 5 million people desperately in need of food, and this number is rising day by day. ActionAid, the largest aid agency working in Kenya, is providing immediate relief for 500,000 people across 11 districts by distributing food and clean water.
