Big Umbrella’s message reaches 10,000 businesses

Big Umbrella is featured in July 2006’s Chamber Link, the news magazine of the Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce.

Interviewed by Roger Monkman, Managing Director Martin Head outlined some of the services we offer to business in the West Midlands, nationally and internationally.

This is the text of the interview, published under the headline of The Big Picture:

The jargon that exists in the marketing and advertising world often serves only to obscure what should be at the core of marketeers’ relationships with clients – clarity of message.

Perhaps the use of buzzwords is intentional – the less the client understands, the more he or she can be bamboozled or maybe it is a specialised language which has grown out of control.

Whatever it is, the message coming from Solihull Chamber member Big Umbrella Media, a TV, video and media production company based at Blythe Valley Park, is very clear – video is the tool of the present and future in the marketing and communications world.

The company is headed up by managing director Martin Head, an award-winning TV production man with over 25 years experience. He has gathered an impressive team of programme makers together, all of whom have worked extensively on productions for national TV companies. In fact they have collectively been responsible for over 2,000 network hours of broadcast television, including “The Clothes Show”, “DIY SOS”, “Bargain Hunt”, “Pet Rescue”, “Gardeners’ World”, “This Morning”, “City Hospital” and “Challenge Anneka” and over 50 television commercials.

And the company has been helped in its expansion by investment from the Advantage Creative Fund, the venture capital investment fund set up to help creative businesses in the West Midlands.

Video is fast taking over as the means for companies to communicate, whether to advertise their products and services, or to inform employees of changes in strategy, health and safety advice or training in new employment law issues.

Martin said: “The key thing about making a video for a client is to find out exactly what they are trying to achieve. Preparation is all important if the information the client wants to get across is to be clear to those being targeted”.

As the cost of new technology comes down, the door opens for companies of all sizes – from international corporates to sole-traders – to use video to tell the story.

“To use a jargon phrase, we are a one-stop shop for video production”, said Martin. “We have our own production equipment and this helps us to offer a cost-effective and value-for-money service, producing videos for as little as a few thousand pounds.”

“We listen to our clients and find out exactly what they and then put together tailor-made solutions. We then remain active with the client rather than waiting for them to come to us. We build up a relationship, helping them to keep ahead of their competition.”

Big Umbrella’s portfolio includes a great deal of work with charities where it is all-important that the message is understood, as well as businesses of all shapes and sizes. “Video can be used in so many ways to market”, said Martin, “The internet, websites, mobile phones as well as the more traditional methods of delivery.

“Video is not on the radar of a lot of companies – but it’s not to be frightened of”, he said, “And there is no reason why it should not be run in parallel with print media campaigns”.
