Living with the New Cross Fire for BBC Radio 1Xtra

Documentary that follows a woman's search for the truth surrounding a still unexplained event in which she nearly lost her life.

In 1981 a fire swept through a house in New Cross, South East London, killing 13 black teenagers and injuring many more. What really happened that night has never been revealed.

The youngest survivor of the fire is Denise Gooding who now goes on her own journey determined to find out how her brother died and how she and another brother survived. With the music of the time and a powerful poem by Linton Kwesi Johnson this documentary transmits the day after the verdict of the second inquest is announced. A verdict that does nothing to resolve the questions nor provides any closure or peace for the families of those who died.

Produced by Rosa Rogers who has worked with the families involved for over two years and has exclusive access to this inside story.

Big Umbrella is also developing a television documentary about this powerful story and we are filming all the key events.
