The Mayor of London's office has commissioned a drama to be distributed on DVD to all of London's teachers as part of a campaign tackling homophobic bullying. Called '2.1 Children', the drama was shot in a North London secondary school with 12 principal actors representing both pupils and teachers. The title refers to the statistic that in every class of 30 children just over 2 may be gay, lesbian or bisexual.
Shot over 2 days this 15 minute drama was directed by Big Umbrella's Martin Head, written by Matthew Thompson, produced by David Roper, shot by Marc Austin, sound recorded by Laura Burei and edited by TIm Garratt.
Using shooting techniques inspired by award winning dramas such as Teachers and Green Wing, the script follows the journey taken collectively by a school and personally by both teachers and pupils. It features a mix of visual reminders and key lessons for the viewer shot during the action as graffiti, on white-boards, exercise books and school notice boards and revealed by the camera as the scenes develop.
A further project is planned aimed specifically at secondary school pupils.
Our partner for the production of this video is Heavy Entertainment who developed the project with all the stake-holders including Stonewall and the Spare Tyre Theatre Company.
The video is due to be launched in late Summer 2006.
