Gail Porter has visited India with ActionAid to meet groups of Street Children in Delhi.
Big Umbrella was commissioned by ActionAid to produce a Video News Release and Media compilation of material shot on her visit for delivery to various broadcasters including ITV, C4 and BBC Scotland.
Gail Porter then appeared on a number of programmes where sequences of her visit to Delhi were included.
On her visit she met rag picker children who live in a slum built on a toxic rubbish dump and sort rubbish for a few rupees a day.
She met children in a market who earn just enough to buy food by carrying heavy loads and she travelled to an ActionAid shelter which is a safe haven for the street kids of Delhi.
The visit was part of the ActionAid Lick Child Poverty Action Day, which this year is on Friday 30 September 2005.
Emma Thompson, Meera Syal, Chris Tarrant, Billie Piper and Jo Brand are just some of the other names who have supported the nationwide fundraiser aimed at putting an end to child poverty.
In today’s world there are more than 600 million children living in poverty. As the Make Poverty History campaign revealed, a child dies every 3 seconds because of being poor. Hunger, disease, and lack of water or education are all avoidable, but today they are causing terrible suffering.
Gail Porter said: “All children should have the opportunity to enjoy a safe and secure childhood, free from poverty. We’re hoping that the big kid in us will take part in all the fun and raise loads of lolly to lick child poverty for good.”
