Big Umbrella is working with Remploy to enhance their corporate communications with staff in their factories and offices around the UK.
In a series of regular videos and DVDs, Chief Executive Bob Warner updates staff on many issues alongside an interpreter who relays the messages simultaneously in British Sign Language (BSL).
A large proportion of Remploy’s staff are disabled and the video messages make important management announcements more accessible. Many hundreds of staff are deaf and use BSL, so having the messages in sign language is an important step in improving internal communications.
Big Umbrella is also working with Remploy on their regular staff newsletter, which features updates from every factory as well as important general information, to ensure that the articles are written in accessible, plain English.
Many organisations and companies now have a duty and a responsibility to make their communications more accessible to their whole work force and may well have a legal obligation under the DDA when communicating Health and Safety and other employment policies.
